I had a great conversation with Silas tonight, one that I need to write down so I won't forget. It all started with a story I told him about 2 brothers growing up. He got very caught up in the "love and marriage" part (along with the part about the older brother becoming a police officer and arresting bandits, but I digress). The cute part was when he told me he wanted to be the older brother, but he didn't want to marry a girl so old (even though I never mentioned an age in my story, other than that she was a grown up). He told me he wanted her to be the same age as him. When I asked how old he was going to be when he got married, he said he would be seven, so she had to be seven, too. He said he didn't know a girl he could marry that was his own age, so I told him we had to pray that God would bring a nice, sweet girl to him. I also told him that if he was going to be a police officer then she was going to have pray every night that God would protect him from the mean bandits. I asked him what color he wanted her hair to be. He said it didn't matter because they could dye it any color they wanted, but he thought red would be awesome. We talked about things she might like to do, like read books or watch movies. He thought she might like to go to "the giant television that's really loud" and she might want to get cotton candy, can you believe it (lots of eyebrow raising and side smiling at that)? I told him that usually the boy paid for that kind of thing so I asked him how he would pay for it (forgetting, of course, that he was a policeman). He said he would go to the bank and get some money out. I told him he had to have a job to get money and asked him what his job would be. He said his job would be to work really hard and do it really well. Then I asked how many babies he wanted to have. He said, "One, just like you." I told him I had two babies, but he took exception to the fact that he wasn't a baby. So I asked how many children he would have and he said he thought three was a good number. After that I wanted to know where they would live, in our house or get their own house? He said he would have his own house. I promptly told him that I knew he was going to leave me, to which he said, "I'll be married to her, but you'll still be my Mommy. Like you have a mommy and Daddy has a daddy." Then he told me that he was going to get a ring for his bride (explaining to me that a bride was a girl about to get married) and I asked what kind of ring. He said it was going to be a gold ring like the one in the Lord of the Rings game we have. I told him that sometimes they put diamonds in rings and told him about my ring (with a few diamonds) and Aunt Sissy's ring with big diamonds. He said he would get a ring that looked like Aunt Sissy's but it would have a big red stone in the middle instead of a diamond.
I tucked him into bed, telling him about how much I love his daddy. I told him that Daddy was the most awesome person EVER. He started to say something about who was even more awesome than Daddy when I stopped him (sure he was going to say Blake) and repeated the fact that Daddy was more awesome than anyone. He told me the person who was more awesome than Daddy. It was God, but he didn't live on land or even on this planet, but that He was way cool.
I know he was pretty much stalling bedtime (which worked), but I love listening to him when he gets in these thoughtful, talkative moods. He was so sincere about all of it, too. One day he'll be grown and married and I won't get to hold him in my lap while he talks to me from his heart, his blue eyes lighting up and smiling, a distant look on his face while he imagines what his life will be like one day. I think it was worth a late bedtime.
