I pulled him into my lap and started talking to him. Soon he told me, "I love you sometimes, Mommy."
"Just sometimes, not all the time?"
"No."
"When do you not love me?"
Again with three fingers held up he said, "When I'm disappointed in you. And when I'm cross at you. And when I'm cross at Sissy."
"Cross at Sissy? Why would you be cross at Sissy," I asked.
"Because sometimes I'm a silly boy. Sometimes I do two things," holding up two fingers, "I do good things and I do bad things."
"Yes, sweetie, but Mommy loves you no matter if you do good things or bad things."
I thought this would venture into an even deeper conversation about love when he looked over at the shelf and asked, "Are those toys magnets?"
