One of the few nice things about my husband having an evening job is that I get to put Silas to bed every weeknight. I should start the bedtime routine earlier, because we end up having good chats almost every night. They reveal his thoughts and his heart more than all of the conversations we have during the day put together. Sometimes he goes from being really serious to being extremely silly in just a few minutes. They also bring out questions about the things he's learning during school. I hope and pray that these chats lay the groundwork for an open line of communication between us when he's older.
Our chat tonight ranged from our trip to England that's coming up and flying on an airplane, to heaven and space, to growing up and becoming a man. He was excited when I told him he only had 14 more years until our culture considered him a man. I told him he could go to college (he said he wouldn't go without me), get a job, or get married. We talked about marrying a kind, gentle girl and not a mean girl that's pretty. He said he would pray for a nice, kind girl for him to marry. How sweet is that? Then he asked me what else he could do when he grew up. I said he could buy a car. His eyes lit up, "Ooh, I want a red one with flames going down it. That would be COOL!" Aaah, boys...
